Gabrielle Aplin - Please Don't Say You Love Me

I really enjoyed this music video! I think that it is extremely cleverly done and shot in a way that you wouldn't expect, as some of the narrative parts are unexpected, which is really nice.

After analysing my 5 music videos, I feel like I like a deep meaning behind something, however this video doesn't seem to have a solid meaning, however it shows an outgoing couple, who are having fun together and the girl is frightened to show her commitment and instead shows in the complete wrong way, by catching other boys' attention, which upsets her boyfriend. In the end, she feels she needs to prove her love for him and she does, in a very special way.

I was slightly confused by the video when I first watched it, as I wasn't sure whether Gabrielle Aplin was also the actress as well as the singer in the video, however they both just similar looking!

I love the sunset shots in the video and the 'country' feel that it has, with the landscape/arty shots.

A lot of Gabrielle's videos start with the sound of the environment and for this video it is the sound of the road as they're driving along. The song doesn't actually start until a few minutes into the video which is quite nice.

There is an unsteady pan downwards at the very start from behind the boys head, allowing the audience to see that he is driving and I like the 'unsteady' feel that continues throughout the car journey, as it is like a 'home video' shot that I like from the previous music videos which I have analysed. There then features a kind of SRS between the boy and the girl:

The editing then continues to straight cut between the two and they lighten up and start to smile at each other until you hear the girl laughing cheekily:

By this series of shots allows the audience to realise the the pair are in love and having a nice car journey together, however there is then a slightly jumpy edit, as the camera jumps from being inside the car, to outside the car and then back inside, which is slightly confusing/jumpy, however it works within the narrative:

There are a lot of CU's and MS's throughout the opening of this music video, however also throughout too, however here the CU's of the boys hand and also the MS's of each boy/girl are in shallow focus, yet the background/foreground of the landscape is out of focus, allowing the focus to be on the characters. This above shot is quite dark and shadowy, as the foreground is bright as it's outside, so I think this kind of shot could be a problem if I was to replicate a similar idea, due to lighting and everything and the standard of my camera.

Once this CU has been shown of his hand driving the car, there is a jerky camera movement as an unpleasent sound is heard, indicating that the car has broken down.
So, this shows how the camera movement links in with the narrative.

As they begin to realise that their is something wrong with the car, an OTS is shown as they look around. These next few shots are quite jarring, however it adds to the suspense of the broken down car.

The camera then shows the couple looking bewildered from an outside shot of the car and the steam from the bonnet begins to build, which really adds to the effect of the sunset. The start of the song then starts to play, which really works and the steam brings out the emphasis of the song. The camera here is extremely wobbly, however not too jerky that it doesn't work, so that's ok.

The camera gives the effect that there is a tracking shot here, however it's just the car moving closer to the tripod, which is nice and fits in well.

The audience then begin to realise that actually this event has brought the couple closer, as the boy opens the bonnet and the girl dives in for a hug. This is extremely romantic/cute, which I guess some people won't like, however I really do. You then are able to see LS of the  girl driving the car and the boy pushing, as they're both smiling. The LS actually holds for a while, which is unusual as the rest of the shots are short and jumpy.

The CU of the singer really works as it jumps between the narrative, as it fits in great with the tambourine which is playing in the track. It cuts as the tambourine sounds.

This shot of Gabrielle works really well and it is held for quite a while as a slow, steady pan is used to pan around her as she sings.

The CU/MS's of the couple work really well, however they're jumpy and unsteady, it fits in with the nature of the video as they're 'messing about' and being an ordinary young couple.

I like the way that the singer is brought into the narrative, as well as the cuts between her and the narrative, as she is shown in the background out of focus sitting on a car bonnet, as the couple try to get the car working. This is really interesting and unique, however links very closely to the Lady Antebellum video that I showed in previous blog posts which really caught my eye, however I can't focus solely on that as it is more country than pop/rock. In their video, the singer is also shown out of focus sitting behind the main actress on the bus. I really like this idea because it allows you to have an ongoing narrative, however bring parts of the band/singer in different settings, yet include them in the narrative which is very unique and i've only seen it being done in those two videos.

If you look closely at the traffic behind, you will see Gabrielle sitting on the car bonnet, however she is out of out focus.

There is a sense of humour in the video as he gets out of breath, which works well.

If I was being really picky, then i'd say that Gabrielle needs to be a bit more emotive and show a bit more enthusiasm when singing as she doesn't look like she's putting a lot of effort in to it.

Apart from that, I love the camera work that is used for the CU's of her.

You can see here that the camera has panned from right to left and Gabrielle follows the camera with her eyes, which is really nice.

After the couple are shown walking somewhere, which you can't make out as is it dark, the editing cuts to Gabrielle walking along with the sun behind her. I personally think that both of these shots would be hard to replicate/get ideas from as the lighting would be really problematic. I would have to use a very HIGH QUALITY camera if I wanted to do something like this.

In the top two shots of Gabrielle, she is not singing which is interesting, she is just walking.
She is shown in numerous different settings, which are all very artistic and pretty. I would like to replicate some of these shots/settings, however from previous experience during The Prisoner video that I shot, the lighting was problematic as I tried to do it during sunset and it was far too bright and didn't cause nice lens flares like this video does - obviously due to the quality of the camera that I was using!

This scene is rather strange, as the camera movements are very jerky and unsteady when you take notice. The girl starts to dance whilst her boyfriend laughs and jokes, however she catches the eye of another boy, shown in the above picture and her boyfriend gets extremely jealous of this, as the two seem to be flirting with eye contact.

"This time i'm going to slow down, coz' I think this could be more, the thing i'm looking for", where lyrics that really caught my eye. These are played as her boyfriend goes and sits in the car in the dark, which implies that he's left as he is getting upset as he feels like the girl doesn't want something serious and he does, so he just needs some time to think and give her some space.

Throughout this scene, Gabrielle doesn't appear an awful lot, however she is brought in a couple of times when she is lip singing.

Once her boyfriend leaves, the other boy is actually shown to go and sit with the girl.

It's also as if Gabrielle is near then as there is an out of focus shadow in the frame, which looks like a shoulder, with the same colour cardigan as the girls.

I love the ending of this video, it's been done very cleverly. His girlfriend leaves as the other boy approaches her and she goes and finds her boyfriend in the car.

The setting is very dark as it's obviously nighttime, however the shots are done cleverly so that the lighting has been positioned carefully, enabling the audience to see what's happening.

As you can see, she  climbs into the car and goes to sleep once she's in there. A steady pan is used as she climbs across the car, which is interesting as a lot of the car shots are unsteady. I love the next part, this is my favourite bit.

Her boyfriend wakes up to see that he is being driven by his girlfriend, however little do the audience know that they're actually on a recovery truck! I love this bit as it is done so cleverly as the truck isn't shown at all when they're inside the car.

Then they drive past a gateway where Gabrielle is standing, which is really nice.
