Ideas

So, after analysing different music videos from different artists/genres, I have decided that I like the videos which have a story behind them, however for the chorus's bring in the singer/band.

After looking through some more videos, I particularly like Lady Antebellum - Just A Kiss. This video features the band and also an ongoing storyline. This video kind of fits the ideas in which I am picturing for my own music video. I have done some research into the meaning of the video because it starts with a women opening her bag to find a video of her partner saying "Don't forget me Julie" and it then kind of takes us through the story of their relationship and the fun times in which they had throughout. Research: Just A Kiss and Meaning Behind Video

It keeps jumping between the story and the women sat on a train/bus with the lead singer featuring in the background of the location, which then leads into scenes of the band members. I really like the way in which it builds up the story throughout the song and how the storyline fits to the lyrics/beat.

The video also seems to switch between the real life storyline/flashback, but also the iPad screen/video feature as if they're taking a video or the women is watching her partner on the iPad. The shots switch between the women in a CU and then the iPad screen.

I love this effect and I think it really gives another feeling to the video and makes the storyline more exciting. Further ahead in the video, when the storyline is showing the couple on their journey together, the camera switches between filming them and then the effect as if they're filming their self.

Here, you can see that this has been filmed to look as if her partner is taking a video of her, which is extremely inventive and works very well. Throughout this short snippet, the shot switches back to 'real life' with the women sat on the bus/train, showing her expression of what she is watching (her events with her partner) and it also switches between the lead singers, so it's all linking in together really well and I love this.

I personally think this song links in really well with my type/genre of music.

After hours of questioning the story and looking at different sites to research the meaning, I have concluded that the whole thing was actually a dream. The whole 'looking back at the memories of their relationship' ends when she wakes up on the train and see's the man who has been in her dreams approach her and sit down. He asks "Have we met before?" and she says "I don't think so. I was having a weird dream". It then switches between the band and the finishing storyline as 'Brady' pulls out an iPad, adding to the weirdness of her dream.

It was such a thought provoking video, which is great as it got me thinking, thus probably got others questioning the meaning too. I think this is why I like this video and 'Everything Has Changed' so much. Also, they both fit into my genre of music as my genre fits into many sub-genres. When I come to look more closely at KT Tunstall, I want to look at her video 'Feel It All', as this video also has a strange storyline, which is thought provoking and think those are the best sorts of videos, personally.

So I think i'd like to combine some of the ideas in this video into my own piece.

  1. Some very useful research overall, Kathryn - you've gone into a lot of detail already. The key thing now is to start focusing in and considering how you might use the various ideas you've encountered.
