Starting Point

Well...I have always wanted to create a music video, as I am a singer/songwriter myself and this project is going to suit me perfectly.

I am planning on looking at a range of different genres, as my type of music fits into: alternative rock, rock, indie, pop, country.

At the moment, I am thinking about the artists who fit into my genre and they're: KT Tunstall, Pink, Taylor Swift, however I am mainly focused on KT Tunstall, as she has worked her way through the business from a young age and has now made it as a successful singer/songwriter and her videos are extremely different. 'Black Horse and A Cherry Tree' is just her singing with her guitar, gathering together different shots, including close up's of her face and guitar and then long shots showing her 'rocking out' to the music. The great thing is too, that we both play guitar which allows me to relate very much to her.
Her recent music video 'Feel It All' is completely different to previously, as it holds an unusual adventure. It has been placed in all black and white which is interesting and follows the relationship between her and another man, however it has been shot in one place, however in a different shots showing them slowly apart, until she ends up standing over a cliff on a plank of wood and he is standing on the other side keeping her alive. So this video holds more of a deeper meaning. So if I was to make my music video based on her material, I would possibly do a mixture of myself playing guitar and singing, however follow a storyline around that.

I have many songs that I have already written which I could use and I have a couple of ideas. My song 'Get It On' is all about relationship and it has a line "as I walk the lonely streets of San Francisco' and I have always wanted to walk along a street with the camera on a track, following me down the street as I sing into the camera. Another one of my songs, 'Reach Out' is about teenage life and feeling like you have no one to reach out to to confide in about your problems. The track starts off with the sound of a child like jewellery box sound when you open the box and a balleriena spins around and make a noise. This shows a clear contrast between children and teenages and how they percieve themselves. My intention was to have it sounding like a fairground, so I could either film a jewellery box, or have a fairground setting. I am also picturing it in black and white and then have the singing parts in colour with me and possibly a band, or myself with a guitar.

It'd be extremely helpful if I could get your input on what you think would be the best song to use for a music video and also what kind of genre you think my material fits into. My SoundCloud address is: Kathryn's SoundCloud
You could also visit my MySpace page as it has a few more songs on it: Kathryn's MySpace
If you could please have a listen and post your thoughts below this post, that'd be much appreciated.

I have also created a 'mock music video' if you like, as part of my AS final piece. It's part of my title sequence and I have used an original song of mine, yet there is a storyline behind it and it fits in with the James Bond title sequences, so if you'd like to take a look it is at the end of this video: Title Sequence
